The Hochzeit
One lone trump, offered face up — who takes it?
A player holding exactly one trump does not have to pass: he can lay that trump down face up and ask who will take it. Whoever accepts becomes his partner — and the whole table watches it happen.
Open the lesson in the appThat is the entire qualification
A Hochzeit may be announced by anyone holding exactly one of the fourteen Rufspiel trumps — no more, no fewer. The trump goes on the table face up for everyone to see. In rank it ties level with a Sauspiel and is beaten by every solo game. It is never a Tout.
And gives a card back
The table is asked in order, starting to the announcer’s left: each of the other three acts exactly once, yes or no. The first to accept has it — nobody after that is asked. Whoever accepts takes the trump and gives back one card — never a trump.
An honest note: at a real table this is a grab, not a poll — whoever reaches first has it. A program cannot run a race, so it asks in order — which favours the player on the announcer’s left. That is how it is, and it deserves saying.
Then no game came about
If all three decline, the same thing has happened as with four passes: no game. At a Ramsch table it becomes a Ramsch; otherwise the hand is scrapped.
The announcer holds no trump at all
After the exchange, the player who announced the Hochzeit holds no trump whatsoever — he had exactly one, it is gone, and no trump may come back. The whole table knows it for the rest of the hand. Nowhere else does the game hand you a certainty like that for free.
Otherwise it plays like a Sauspiel: Herz is trump, the party needs 61. There is simply no called Ass — so no Rufsau obligation, no Davonlaufen, nothing to go looking for.
One more honest note: the “official” rules do not cover the Hochzeit at all — everything on this page is tavern convention. And the rule that a refused marriage becomes a Ramsch at a Ramsch table is our own decision.
